Celebrating Women's History Month

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? Brave, intelligent, and strong women have helped shape American history since the beginning and will continue to positively impact the world in the years to come. Women’s History Month is an important time to honor the incredible contributions of women not only from the past, but women who will shape the future too.

How it Started

Women’s History Month first began in 1978 when a school district in Sonoma, California organized a weeklong celebration to honor the contributions of women in American history. Although it began as a local celebration, the idea quickly gained traction, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter officially set aside the week of March 8th (International Women’s Day) as Women’s History Week. Seven years later, in 1987, Congress designated the entire month of March as Women’s History Month in the United States.

Why is Women’s History Month important?

The achievements and contributions of courageous women have helped shape the course of American history. From Betsy Ross, who sewed the first American flag, to human rights activists like Susan B. Anthony and Rosa Parks, America is what it is today because of the brave contributions of many incredible women. Women’s History Month is an opportunity to honor the past and look forward to the future.

How can you celebrate Women’s History Month?

Wondering what you can do to celebrate Women’s History Month this year? Here are a few ideas:

Learn about the women who have helped shape history

This Women’s History Month, set aside some time to learn about the women who have helped shape American history. Check out a book from the library, watch a historical film, or even visit a local museum. Learning more about some of the women who have influenced history will help you honor the past and find inspiration for the future.

Appreciate the women in your life

Women’s History Month isn’t only a time to celebrate women from the past–it’s an opportunity to honor women who have impacted your own life too. Write a heartfelt card to a female family member, teacher, or friend who has influenced your life, or organize a special get-together to remind the women around you how much you value them.

Learn About Women in Your Family

Another way to celebrate Women’s History Month is by learning about the women in your own family. The hard work and sacrifices of the women who came before you likely contribute to the opportunities you have today. Ask older family members to share stories about your female ancestors, or spend some time exploring your family tree. It’s a great way to honor the past and learn more about yourself too.

Look forward to the future

Finally, while it’s easy to focus on the past during Women’s History Month, don’t forget to look forward to the future. The contributions of many brave and courageous women have helped shape history, and so can you. Happy Women’s History Month!
